One of the more artistic members of the Grimaldi dynasty, he was a reluctant monarch and was faced with many immense problems (through which he was helped by his energetic wife, the first Princess Caroline) and was only too willing to see responsibility pass to his son Prince Charles III. He had only inherited the throne in the first place because of the lack of a wife or children on the part of his brother Prince Honore V.
